Has anybody seen this?
It's probably a fake news site, but it would be awesome if he had said this!

Chocolate

Sitting here, I caught myself munching on chocolate chips while watching TV before I head off to my night volunteer shift.
Chocolate chips!!!
And I remember eating a giant cookie just a few nights ago... my nutrition hasn't been the best lately, and I blame it on stress & exams.
But if I put the blame on those, then why am I still eat crap - my exams are over!

So I'm going to
  • stop snacking
  • drink more water
  • eat balanced meals
... just as soon as I finish the packet of chocolate chips :)

I'm going to my first ever social run tomorrow, and I'm excited! I've been intimidated by the thought of running with other faster, more experienced runners.
I've read others being comforted through comments on the event page - there's a variety of runners and everyone is welcome - and I keep reminding myself that I loved running with Dora in Hungary.
So I'm giving it a try and hoping for the best! It doesn't hurt that the timing is perfect, and they're finally meeting up on my side of the town! :)

Overwhelming Kindness

I was just thinking about kindness today.
And I was going to try and find out how to explain that I get emotional when I hear about people doing nice things for each other, when I realised that 'overwhelming kindness' might be an accurate phrase.

Last year, I went to an AIESEC conference in Ottawa. My favourite, favourite thing at that conference (apart from the energy and cool people I met) was one of the last events on the last day, where they set aside about an hour to talk about how we were changing the world.
I can't remember how it started, but what I remember was a room full of people volunteering one good/kind/thoughtful thing they had done for someone else. There were stories about people talking to strangers that looked upset, giving people rides when it was raining, paying for someone's bus fare when they didn't have enough change... it went on and on. Person after person stood up and said one thing they had done for someone else. And at first I was scared to say anything because I felt there wasn't anything big enough that I could share with people that did these amazing things.
But after each person said something, I realised that even a tiny, small thing can make someone's day brighter.

And by the end of this - the facilitators had to limit people "okay, just two more...." - I was so overwhelmed by the good and self-less things these people in the same room had done for other people, that tears were streaming down my face and I couldn't wait to leave and do more good things for people.

Sometimes I feel that way - I feel overwhelmed when I see someone do something nice for someone else. I was watching 127 hours the other day (fantastic movie, by the way!!) and there's one scene where all these concerned people give water to this guy and call him help... they didn't have to do that, but it helped save his life. When I hear about bystander stories where people stand up for victims of bullying and walk off in protest; Random Acts of Kindness day; when a heard the story about my friend getting a bad call and having to leave work, and the person waiting for service in line understood and helped her close shop - these things are so touching that they really get to me.
Perhaps I'm more affected by the good things that I hear about, vs the bad, because they aren't as well heard of. The news is always full of bad things happening, that we deal with it (or at least I do) by protect ourselves and putting distance between what's happening there and here.
But when I hear about good, kind things happening, it really gets to me. There IS good in the world. I knew it all along :)

In India, I was constantly having a debate with the other interns whether there are more good people in the world than bad. I'm convinced there is more good than bad, but they think the opposite. While our opinions could be based on our own experiences and where we grew up, I think it says a lot about ourselves.

I'm proud to say I still have hope that people can be kind and thoughtful towards each other. It makes me feel that I'm not alone, and it makes me hopeful that if I'm ever in trouble, people will help me in a heartbeat. Maybe it's just my way of dealing with the world - it's better to be hopeful than scared - but it may either burn me out in my field (social work) or help me greatly.
Perhaps this is based on naivety and will wear out soon.
Who knows?! But every time I listen to a TED talk about change and doing good things, it makes me tear up a little.

What a long rant! What kindness have you done for someone lately?

Final Papers

Welcome to 4th year, first semester.I'm swamped with final papers, group projects (do they ever end?!!!) and MSW applications. Things are going okay for now.

I have been sleeping less lately and eating poorly. I find the hour to be extra LOUD lately, but that might just be because I'm cranky and have started to hone in and yell at anyone that is making any noise (I live with a drummer and two guitarists, and they hold jams at the house weekly... and TAP, they TAP and shake and whistle too often!).

I haven't been able to make time for swimming hours in what seems like a month, at least. I haven't been to the gym except to work. I sign in, pass the machines whistfully while promising myself that I'll join a class next semester, and continue to my office. The office that now has a virus-infected computer. Boo :( (Not my fault, promise!)

I have been fitting in exercise in small ways. I have been on the bike trainer for a few study breaks. I walk to and from placement 2x week. I also walk to my volunteer shift downtown (40 mins), once a week. The main reason for this is that the bus prices have recently gone up, and I don't feel particularly inclined to spend $5 on a two-way trip if I have the time (and the need) to walk there :)
I also got an outdoor 5k done this week, BOOM.

I plan to finally be able to completely relax in 2 weeks. In which time I will hopefully make my way to the gym MORE often, aside from being paid to be there.
Looking forward to a little break! Stay happy everyone :)

All or Nothing

I've been very, very busy the past two weeks. And I will continue to be busy for a while.
I don't know when it happened, but I noticed recently that my day-to-day planner is packed with things. It's so packed, that when I had to find a two-hour time slot for radio phone-answering volunteering, I couldn't find a consecutive 2hours to donate.
How did this happen??

Well, I'm not sure... In an incident in class on Monday, I opened my mouth to offer help to another student group that was missing a person, and only after I said it, I realised that I was too busy to be in ANOTHER group. (Things did work out for that group!.) I've noticed this a lot lately. I will think I'm free and offer to help/volunteer/step in and then remember that my planner is packed and I'll likely screw things up if I offer any help.

I have:

  • school (=3 regular courses)
  • a field placement and a practicum course
  • community volunteering
  • VISA executive duties
  • a part-time job
  • co-hosting duties for a half-hour radio show
  • and a LOT of group assignments.

And I'll have to add volunteering at the Sudanese Centre in the near future, because my Saturdays were too free so I offered to help out with a kid's program.....

The point here is not to bitch about how busy I am and how rushed I feel. Because I don't feel too rushed, and I've been organized enough to feel calm, rather than stressed. Whenever an hour comes up and I have nothing to do, I seem to jump on the computer to (check email) check facebook, read blogs and research interesting things (such as the World hitting 7 billion people, and this site). I have been slacking a tiny bit at the gym and at class readings (only this week, don't worry).

So the point is that it's not all or nothing. I don't have to be 100% busy every day to keep myself entertained. I don't have to do nothing (aka watching TV) when I'm free. I can be productive, useful AND entertained all in one. So whenever the next free hour comes along, I might head to the gym. I might read another chapter for a class. Because all the little things will add up to SOMETHING, and I won't forever be in the limbo of the mindset that is 'all or nothing'.

This morning, I fit in 2 running miles after a meeting with my boss, and between a meeting with a prof. Between meetings and classes today, I ran errands or read a Crisis textbook. I'm slowly learning to USE my free time in small ways that add up, which will eventually help future me feel less stressed, rushed, and silly :)

Thirty Minute Thursday!

I'm back from the gym, where I just ran 3.1miles in THIRTY MINUTES AND THIRTY-TWO SECONDS!!!!!!!!!!
30:32

How crazy is that??!

Okay, let me tell you something. I can't really run fast. I have been struggling with speed forever. It poops me out, and I'm kinda lazy. I mean, why run fast, when I could do the same distance slower and not need to throw-up?

I've been stuck with the 5K distance:

Real race PR: 33 minutes

Virtual race PR: 32minutes

But my treadmill 5k PR is now 30:32 and I'm going to get it down to <30 by 2012.

(Hopefully....)

(Maybe...)

Wish me luck!
What are your New Year's plans? Is it too early to think about 2012 yet? :P

2 mile

I went for a 10pm run tonight. I used to do this all the time in Kuwait - I wouldn't let myself go to bed until I did a loop around the campus. It was the easiest way to keep up the running streak - sort of like brushing my teeth.

It was pretty short, just 20 mins. A little shy of 2 miles. My cool-down (which I usually skip) would have put me over 2 miles though :)

I just needed to move. I haven't been getting to the gym this week. I can feel my whole body being tense because I'm stressed about this coming Monday. My shoulders are high and my jaw is tight. I try to stop this whenever I notice it, and I'm just waiting for the last sign - the eye twitch. With that usually comes the difficulty sleeping. And then Monday will be over, my midterms will be done, and I have a little break before the next stress-attack.

So, in order to try and fix the situation (apart from shoulder massage therapy whenever Calvin is around) I will try to get a run in every day. Or at least a walk. And it has to be at least a mile. Let's see how long I can do this.

The best part of my run was that I smelt zero skunks. Guess the colder weather made them go away!
It's rainbow-mitten weather time again. :)
